VIA’s New Cargo Terminal on Track for This High Season

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced the upcoming completion of Velana International Airport’s (VIA) new cargo terminal complex, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s $1 billion expansion project.

The Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) from China was awarded the contract for constructing the runway, fuel farm, and cargo terminal complex, with the runway already finished and the cargo terminal complex now in its final stages of completion.

Notably, the cargo harbour and the adjacent road have been completed, with ongoing construction efforts. The new cargo terminal complex, located on the western side of Velana International Airport, will feature cutting-edge equipment to facilitate efficient cargo loading and unloading.

Expected to process around 120,000 tonnes of cargo annually, the terminal will exceed the capacity of the existing cargo terminal by more than 50 percent.

MACL emphasized the swift progress of other developments at Velana International Airport, including ongoing work on the passenger terminal. Once the new cargo terminal complex is completed, the airport will enhance its operations to meet the growing demands of the region.
