Ukrainian security sources have reportedly confirmed that Ukraine carried out strikes on two sanctioned shadow fleet tankers off Turkey on Friday. CNN and AFP cite officials saying a new version of the “Sea Baby” maritime drone was used, with video footage of one attack posted online.
Virat Hit Twice
The tanker Virat suffered minor starboard-side damage and was struck a second time early Saturday. Turkey says the vessel is stable, with no fire onboard. Turkey deployed a rescue boat to monitor the Virat, with teams waiting at a safe distance as the vessel remained stable and did not request evacuation. A towing operation began Saturday afternoon, and the tanker is expected to reach Türkeli on December 1.

Fire crews worked overnight on the Kairos after a major explosion. All 25 crew members were safely evacuated with no reported injuries. The fire on the open decks has been fully extinguished, while cooling and firefighting continue inside the vessel.
Fire Contained on Kairos
The first targeted vessel, Kairos, experienced a major explosion and fire. All 25 crew members were safely evacuated. Turkish authorities report that the fire on the open decks has been extinguished, while cooling operations continue inside.

Increasing Maritime Security Risks
Turkey’s Transport Minister confirmed that both incidents were caused by “external interference,” likely a drone or explosive device. Security experts say this aligns with broader efforts to disrupt Russia’s oil trade.
Both Virat and Kairos are reportedly Chinese-owned, sanctioned for Russian oil activity, and listed with “unknown” flags after ownership changes in 2025.
Ukraine has spent months targeting Russian oil refineries with long-range drones, but the recent strikes on tankers mark a new phase in its campaign.
