UAE Anticipates Re-election in IMO Council

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) continues to strengthen its position as a global maritime leader, propelling its bid for re-election to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, category B, in the upcoming 2023 elections. Its remarkable contributions to the maritime industry are garnering attention worldwide.

In recent years, the UAE’s maritime sector has flourished, with its GDP surging to AED 129 billion in 2022, marking an impressive 18% increase from the previous year. Notably, the country has earned high rankings in global competitiveness indicators, securing third place in transport services trade and the Bunker Supply Index, and fifth place as a major competitive maritime hub.

The UAE’s ports are among the top 10 globally in terms of container handling volume, managing over 19 million TEUs and recording more than 25,000 port calls. The nation’s dedication to sustainability and emission reduction is evident in its seventh-place ranking in the Logistics Performance Index.

The UAE’s active involvement in the IMO Council is driven by a commitment to advance global maritime safety, security, and efficiency, aligning with IMO’s goals. The country has played a significant role in introducing crucial amendments to support the industry, ensuring safety, security, and marine environmental protection.

The UAE’s maritime reach extends beyond its borders, serving countries from China to Eastern Europe. Through its involvement in the IMO, the UAE seeks to promote best practices, share expertise, and enrich technical and legal discussions.

The country’s climate neutrality strategy aims to reduce emissions by 40% by 2030 and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This commitment aligns with international agreements and initiatives, emphasizing the UAE’s dedication to clean alternatives and green hydrogen fuel.

The UAE’s influence in the maritime industry is not limited to its internal development but extends globally through investments and active participation in international projects. The Blue Pass Project and the World Logistics Passport, along with maritime investments in 78 countries, foster trade connections, automation, and digitization within the sector.
