A landing craft traveling from K. Thilafushi capsized near K. Gaafaru on Friday morning, leaving two people missing.
The Maldives Police Service said it received a report of the incident at around 8:45 a.m. There were 10 people on board the vessel at the time.
Eight people were rescued, while search and rescue operations continue for the two who remain missing.
The incident occurred after the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) issued a Yellow Alert for severe weather, warning of wind gusts up to 50 mph.
According to the MET Office, a low-pressure trough over the northern and southeastern parts of the country has generated extensive rain clouds across the western Maldives. The agency has forecast unsettled weather across much of the country, with adverse conditions expected to continue over the next two days.
