The United States will impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods starting Friday, a move that threatens to disrupt shipping flows and unsettle long-standing trade negotiations between the United States and India.
President Donald Trump announced the tariff as part of a broader crackdown on what he described as India’s high import duties and non-monetary trade barriers. He also cited India’s continued purchases of Russian oil and arms, and its alignment with the BRICS group, which he views as “anti-American.”
The tariff is expected to strike Indian exporters, particularly in shipping-heavy sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, gems, and jewellery, industries that contribute significantly to the country’s $87 billion in annual exports to the U.S.
With U.S. ports handling considerable volumes of Indian cargo, shipping lines and logistics firms now face uncertainty.
