Thilafushi berth handles fourth vessel as MPL advances cargo relocation plans

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) loaded 372 TEUs onto the general cargo vessel MV Celestia at Thilafushi Berth in under 24 hours. This initiative is part of MPL’s efforts to reduce congestion at Malé Commercial Harbour.

The operation marks the latest milestone in MPL’s expansion of cargo handling at Thilafushi. Since trial berthing began in May 2026, MV Celestia has become the fourth vessel to berth there. Last month, MPL completed the trial berthing of the container vessel MSS Galena.

According to the Minister of Economic Development, Transport & Trade, Mohamed Saeed, relocating cargo operations from the Malé Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi is a permanent solution to the congestion challenges at the country’s main commercial port.

The new container terminal at Thilafushi is expected to become operational by November 2027.
