The World’s First Passenger Fast Ferry with Machine Vision

Fred. Olsen Express, a leading ferry operator in the Canary Islands, is pioneering a new era in maritime safety by installing SEA.AI, a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) based anti-collision technology, on its vessels.

This move positions Fred. Olsen Express as a leader in the fast ferry industry, continuously striving to improve safety standards. SEA.AI bridges a critical gap in collision avoidance by using “machine vision” and AI to detect and identify objects in the water at short to medium ranges, a capability previously lacking in existing systems.

Beyond AIS: SEA.AI Identifies What Matters

While traditional radar and AIS (Automatic Identification System) can identify large vessels, they struggle with smaller craft and objects like buoys or debris. SEA.AI steps in, utilizing high-resolution daylight and thermal cameras to provide a constant 360-degree view around the vessel.

The system’s AI analyzes real-time visual and thermal data, comparing it to a vast database of marine objects. This allows SEA.AI to differentiate between potential threats and harmless objects, providing crucial information to bridge officers.

Benefits Beyond Collision Avoidance

SEA.AI’s thermal cameras offer an additional advantage in search and rescue scenarios, making it easier to locate people overboard. Furthermore, the high-resolution imagery provides invaluable assistance in identifying potential targets.

Fred. Olsen Express Embraces Innovation

“SEA.AI offers incredible innovations,” said Ivan Fernandez, Head of the Technical Department at Fred. Olsen Express. “It’s like having an extra officer on watch, constantly scanning the surroundings and providing real-time alerts.”

A New Era for Maritime Safety

The adoption of SEA.AI by Fred. Olsen Express is a significant step forward for maritime safety. This innovative technology sets a new benchmark for the industry, highlighting the importance of continuous improvement and the transformative potential of AI in ensuring passenger and crew well-being.
