Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has announced that subsidised fuel for fishermen is now available at 13 locations across the Maldives, including nine newly introduced sites.
According to the minister, fuel supply for fishing vessels is being extended to three more atolls. At a Special Cabinet Committee press conference, he said efforts continue to ensure all fishing vessels can access affordable fuel regardless of location.
He noted that rising global oil prices are placing pressure on the wider economy, making it essential to support fishermen so they can continue operating.
The minister added that fish processors and exporters are facing challenges, particularly due to high air freight costs, though exports continue despite these difficulties.
So far, more than 1.1 million litres of fuel have been supplied under the subsidised fuel programme. Rising oil prices are linked to ongoing unrest in the Middle East, affecting import costs.
