Study Finds Seafarers Contribute $17B to Philippine Economy Each Year

A Clearer Picture of a Quiet Economic Engine

The Philippines remains one of the world’s top seafaring nations, supplying more than a quarter of the global maritime workforce. Yet the true economic weight of the manning industry has long been unclear. A new study now offers a clearer picture and warns authorities to safeguard the country’s standing in global shipping.

According to the study, the seafaring sector generated $17 billion in economic activity in 2024. Supporting almost 400,000 jobs and contributing around 4% of the national GDP. Shipowners spent $923.3 million locally, while seafarers brought home $2.5 billion in household income. Their remittances reached $5.6 billion, strengthening foreign reserves and stimulating spending, business growth, and tax revenue.

Jobs Beyond the Sea

The report is produced by the Centre for Research and Communication (CRC) and the ALMA Maritime Group. The report shows how the industry’s impact extends far beyond ships, fueling jobs in training, logistics, insurance, and maritime services.

“For every peso a seafarer sends home, nearly three pesos circulate through the economy,”. Said CRC President Winston Padojinog, who stressed the need to protect the industry’s credibility. He warned that global confidence in Filipino seafarers is essential to sustaining these gains.

This comes as the sector faces external pressures. The European Commission has previously threatened restrictions over concerns about training standards. At the same time, recent U.S. immigration crackdowns have led to the deportation of more than 130 Filipino crew members, prompting protests from Manila.

The CRC study concludes that the country’s maritime influence and economic activity depend on consistent policies and strong training standards. It also warns that maintaining the trust of international shipowners is essential for the industry’s long-term stability.
