international waters

The Chief Executive Officer and Managing DIrector of State Trading Organization, Husen Amru, has revealed that Maldives State Shipping (MSS) is looking to expand their scope towards international business and trade. He made this statement while speaking on the Public Service Media’s (PSM) Raajje Miadhu Programme, on 7th March 2022.

Speaking during the programme, Amru clarified that they were now looking into ways to further expand their scope to include new ventures in international trade, an ambitious vision backed by the success MSS has enjoyed since its launch in 2020. He stated that this in no small part due to the high quality standards maintained by the company, having gained the trust of the public within a short duration of time. Noting that MSS is being expanded at a very swift pace, Amru revealed that the largest cargo shipping vessel in the Maldives, a 45000 tonne vessel, would be added to the MSS fleet within the month of April 2022. The vessel is targeted to be utilized to maintain international shipping costs and fair prices for construction material in the Maldives. Another container ship will also be added to the MSS fleet in the near future.

The objective is to stem the flow of foreign currency out of the Maldives, Amru said.

MSS has initiated several ventures in recent years to improve the flow of goods into the nation. The first cargo ship owned by the company, MSS Galena, arrived in the Maldives on 23rd November 2021, carrying 223 tonnes of cargo on her maiden voyage. MSS also initiated the first direct cargo ferry service between Tuticorin and Addu/Thinadhoo in 2021.
