Rough seas and heavy rain forecast across Maldives

The Maldives Meteorological Service has predicted that the weather will remain bad all through Friday, with an improvement anticipated from Saturday.

In its forecast until 6 p.m. today, the Met Office said most parts of the Maldives are likely to experience rain and thunderstorms, with heavy rainfall possible in some areas.

Winds are expected from the west and northwest at 5–15 mph in the southern atolls and 13–23 mph elsewhere. Squalls could bring winds of up to 40 mph.

Sea conditions are expected to remain rough across most of the country, while seas in the south will be slight to moderate but could become rough during squalls. Wave heights are forecast at 2–5 feet in the southern atolls and 4–7 feet in the north and central regions.

The white alert issued for the area from Haa Alif Atoll to Thaa Atoll has also been extended until 5 p.m. today. With heavy rain, thunderstorms and squall winds of up to 40 mph expected, the Met Office has urged the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
