The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support the growth of exports and sustainable development in the Maldives.
This collaboration aims to tackle the persistent barriers faced by Maldivian exporters in reaching international markets. These include complex regulatory and certification processes, inconsistent registration systems, and challenges in integrating into global value chains, issues that continue to limit the global competitiveness of local businesses.

Under the MoU, MEDT and UNDP will work together on export market research, with a focus on identifying regulatory and certification requirements in key trading partner countries. The findings will help Maldivian exporters by making compliance easier and supporting smoother trade processes.
According to the ministry, this initiative aims to help local businesses grow internationally, boost their competitiveness, and increase national export levels through informed policy support and capacity building.
This partnership reflects the government’s commitment to building a stronger, more globally connected economy by helping local businesses succeed in international markets.
