One Dead, Two Missing After Landing Craft Overturn

A landing craft heading to K. Eriyadhoo overturned early Thursday, leaving one person dead and two missing.

The 100-foot vessel, Almaak Fiya, operated by Almaak Maldives, was travelling from Malé City to the resort island when it capsized sometime after midnight. Seven people were on board.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard rescued four people from the scene. Later in the morning, divers recovered the body of one missing person from underwater, while the search continues for the remaining two.

According to the Maldives Police, two among the missing were inside an excavator on the landing craft at the moment of the accident.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of those on board, including the person who died. The Almaak Fiya has now sunk beneath the sea.
