North Harbour Upgrade to Enhance Access and Streamline Cargo Operations

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has initiated a phased development of Malé’s North Harbour, one of the capital’s most active maritime zones, in a bid to reduce congestion and enhance operational efficiency for both commercial and public users.

Currently serving as a vital logistics hub, the North Harbour sees heavy daily vessel traffic, with frequent loading and unloading of cargo. As pressure on space and services continues to mount, MPL’s upgrade plan includes new storage facilities and improved access to key port services such as water and fuel supply.

A central feature of the project is the strategic relocation of select cargo operations to the nearby industrial island of Thilafushi. The relocation is anticipated to significantly ease marine traffic in Malé’s already congested harbour by diverting inter-island cargo shipments. By bypassing the capital, this rerouting is expected to streamline vessel movement, reduce turnaround times, and improve overall port efficiency within the Greater Malé Region.

To further improve cargo flow, MPL is introducing designated unloading zones and traffic control measures to streamline vessel movements and ease pressure on surrounding roads. The development is being carefully staged to ensure uninterrupted service during construction.

The designated North Harbour area, stretching from MPL’s main site to the junction near the local market beside the fish market, was formally handed over to MPL on 4 July under an agreement with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
