A cyber espionage campaign targeting critical maritime infrastructure in the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean Sea has been linked to the Indian nation-state threat actor, SideWinder. The campaign, discovered by BlackBerry Research and Intelligence Team, has specifically targeted countries including Maldives, Pakistan, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and the Nepal.
SideWinder, known for its aggressive tactics, has been operating since 2012 and is notorious for using spear-phishing to deliver malicious payloads. The latest attacks employ emotionally manipulative lures such as sexual harassment, employee termination, and salary cuts to trick victims into opening infected Microsoft Word documents.
These documents exploit known vulnerabilities to download and execute malware, ultimately aiming to gather intelligence. While the exact nature of the final payload remains unknown, the threat actor’s history indicates a focus on intelligence gathering.
BlackBerry warns that SideWinder’s evolving infrastructure and tactics suggest continued attacks in the future. This development comes as another cyber threat, suspected to be linked to Russia, targets entities interested in Indian political affairs with a different type of malware.
The revelation underscores the growing threat of cyber espionage targeting critical infrastructure and highlights the need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive information.
