A speedboat carrying students enrolled in the second batch of the National Service Initial Training Course capsized while travelling from Maafilaafushi to Male’ on Monday.
According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), two Marine Police vessels were dispatched after authorities received reports that one of the speedboats transporting the students had suffered a mechanical failure during the journey.
Some of the students who fell overboard near Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa were later rescued, according to MNDF, which confirmed that all students are in good condition.
The incident occurred when one of the speedboats carrying the National Service students broke down near Hulhumale’ and began sinking.
The students were taken out of the vessel and into the water as the speedboat went under.
