Cargo operations at Male’ Commercial Harbour are facing delays after a noticeable rise in new vessels calling at the port.
According to Maldives State Shipping (MSS), the surge in arrivals has led to congestion at the harbour, slowing unloading activities. The company noted that cargo movement between Sri Lanka and the Maldives has also been affected. Flight delays and limited space on some of the newly operating vessels have disrupted schedules, potentially delaying the arrival of goods.

MSS said efforts are underway to determine the causes of the slowdown and reduce its impact on customers.
The delays come shortly after a major policy change introduced on January 25, when Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) granted uninterrupted access for foreign vessels to enter Male’ Commercial Harbour, the first such move in over three decades.
The Ministry of Transport stated that the reform strengthens safety measures, including improved vehicle movement, proper permitting, and pilotage services aligned with international standards. The updated system is also expected to reduce vessel waiting times outside the harbour and lower operational costs.
Describing the shift as a milestone, the ministry stated that the initiative aims to position Male’ Commercial Harbour as a more reliable international port. Officials added that the change is intended to support the growth of the Maldives’ maritime transport sector and encourage increased vessel traffic to the country.
