Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has successfully completed the trial berthing of a container vessel at its Thilafushi berth as part of ongoing efforts to reduce congestion at the Malé Commercial Harbour (MCH).
The container vessel MSS Galena recently berthed at the facility, marking a significant step in MPL’s plans to expand port operations and improve vessel traffic distribution.
According to MPL, the initiative is expected to ease pressure on the Malé Commercial Harbour while improving vessel turnaround times. The arrangement will allow empty containers to be loaded directly from Thilafushi, helping streamline cargo handling operations.
The move is being implemented as an interim measure to enhance port efficiency ahead of the opening of the new Thilafushi Container Port, which is scheduled to become operational in November 2027.
MPL said the trial demonstrates its continued efforts to strengthen the country’s maritime logistics network and improve cargo operations efficiency.
