Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has expanded its sea-to-air transshipment services through a new partnership with Qatar Airways. The agreement was formalized by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MPL and Ace Travels Maldives, the General Service Agent for Qatar Airways in the Maldives.
The MoU aims to leverage Qatar Airways’ extensive global network to transport cargo via air from the Maldives, complementing MPL’s existing sea-to-air transshipment initiative. This service is designed to expedite the delivery of goods, particularly for time-sensitive shipments.
Since launching the sea-to-air services in May, the Maldives has successfully re-exported 25,191 clothing packages to various international destinations, including Italy, Germany, the United States, Canada, and Turkey. The initial shipment was a consignment of garments from Bangladesh.
MPL’s Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, expressed satisfaction with the early results of the initiative. “The service has generated significant revenue, demonstrating its potential to contribute to the Maldives’ economic growth,” he stated. “This aligns with the government’s vision of expanding economic activity and increasing national revenue.”
Mohamed Firaq, Managing Director of Ace Travels Maldives, echoed this optimism, emphasizing the role of Qatar Airways in facilitating the sea-to-air transshipment. “With Qatar Airways’ global reach and capacity to transport 50 tonnes of goods, we are confident in the future of this service,” he said.
The sea-to-air transshipment model is expected to significantly boost the Maldives’ trade capabilities. By reducing the time required for shipping merchandise by sea, the service aims to meet the demands of the commercial industry and enhance the country’s position in global trade.
