MPL Launches Pre-Storage Container System

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has introduced a pre-storage container system at the Male commercial harbour, effective from August 5, 2023. The aim is to streamline the handling process of imported goods, especially for those utilizing the harbour’s services.

This new system focuses on storing Less than Container Load (LCL) shipments, specifically containers with a volume of less than 10 cubic meters (CBM). After completing the preliminary storage period for these LCL containers, they will be stored accordingly.

MPL has also disclosed the fee structure for the pre-storage facility, which includes Goods and Services Tax (GST). The charges will be based on a per CBM per day basis, with the following rates:

  • CBM 0-3: MVR 85.67 per CBM per day (MVR 92.52 with GST)
  • CBM <3-6: MVR 57.11 per CBM per day (MVR 61.68 with GST)
  • CBM <6-above: MVR 42.83 per CBM per day (MVR 46.26 with GST)

This service is expected to reduce demurrage fees for goods held at the harbour and expedite the loading process for shipping agents.
