MPL and HDC sign land lease agreement to expand container yard capacity in Hulhumalé Terminal

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) have signed a land lease agreement for the expansion of the container yard in Hulhumalé International Terminal in Hulhumalé City. The agreement was signed on 23rd March 2022.

MPL revealed in a tweet that the agreement was signed that afternoon, and that the expansion would ‘significantly improve our operational efficiency’. MPL would be renting the land adjacent to the Hulhumalé International Terminal to store empty containers. According to MPL, the newly leased land can accommodate some 2,000 containers for storage in an area of 120,000 sqft.

The main commercial hub and port, Malé Commercial Harbor, has long had issues with lack of storage space for empty containers. MPL stated that this move would not only assist in alleviating the pressures faced by that problem, but would also help streamline operations and improve the capacity of Hulhumalé International Terminal.
