Vavu Kyeyodhoo Shipwreck has broken free from its resting place and is now drifting across Vaavu Atoll. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has issued a travel advisory, urging caution for vessels navigating the area, particularly at night.
According to MNDF, the ship is expected to drift toward Ali Huras Kandu, which is the channel between Vaavu and Meemu atolls, posing a potential hazard to marine traffic within and around the atoll.
The origins of the shipwreck remain cloaked in mystery, though it is believed to be an Indonesian vessel that drifted unmanned into the atoll during a fierce storm a decade ago in 2015. First spotted by two fishermen from Felidhoo, the efforts to salvage the vessel failed, and it was eventually grounded at its resting place.
The boat’s sudden movement has raised concerns over both navigation safety and the possible loss of a unique attraction.
