For over two decades, Zamrooth Nawaz Salie has manoeuvred through the complexities of the logistics sector with, not just with expertise, but also dedication to understanding the people behind every shipment. Helming Brandz and Trendz Maldives Pvt Ltd as CEO while simultaneously leading Spedicon Logistics Pvt Ltd. and Spedicon Maldives Pvt Ltd. as CEO and MD, Salie has extensive knowledge encompassing liner shipping to the intricacies of consolidation and groupage. His forte, however, lies in weaving these elements into a seamless logistics network with a human touch.

Salie’s journey began not in boardrooms, but in the bustling world of hospitality. As a waiter, he honed the innate ability to read unspoken needs and anticipate desires. But the vocation never quite felt right, and after taking some well-placed advice during his early days, he switched to the shipping sector and found his true calling.

“People have always said I have a lot of potential. One of the clients that I was entertaining gave me a heads up and
told me I have so much talent and I’m so capable, I should be an executive.” Salie says about his advent into the sector.

Salie took this advice to heart. His early years were spent honing his skills in vessel operations, meticulously orchestrating the movements of integrated feeder services. This hands-on experience instilled a deep appreciation for the complexities of maritime logistics, which would later prove invaluable as he transitioned into sales and marketing. Salie’s talent for building relationships and his innate ability to identify potential quickly propelled him through the ranks of multinational companies. He carved a niche for himself in Singapore, only to return to Sri Lanka in 2005, driven by a desire to forge his own path.

“I felt like I was taken for a ride there,” he reflects, his voice laced with a hint of determination. “So I opened my own company.” This entrepreneurial spirit, coupled with his confidence in his own abilities, gave birth to Spedicon Logistics, a company that would soon become synonymous with excellence in the Sri Lankan logistics landscape.

The kind of leadership that Salie turned to with his own company, was not merely about direction, but rather about “igniting potential”. He excels at articulating goals with infectious clarity, aiming at empowering individuals to
leverage their unique strengths and contribute meaningfully to the collective vision. A master communicator, his fluency in English, Sinhala, and Tamil facilitate clear and persuasive exchanges that engender trust and understanding. Whether guiding his team internally or forging partnerships with clients and associates, his eloquence shines through.

But Salie’s story is not one of unmitigated success. He readily acknowledges the challenges he has faced, the most significant being a betrayal of trust that threatened to topple his carefully constructed plans and company itself. “It was a rollercoaster ride,” he admits, “But I overcame it.”

Steadfast through adversity, Salie emerged with his leadership skills further honed and his resolve strengthened. He attributes this resilience to his faith in Almighty Allah and the support of his family, both biological and professional.

“I consider my team to be part of my family,” he says “I have over 100 people, a multinational team, across our offices in Colombo, Malé, and Dubai, all working together with the same dedication and passion.”

This dedication manifests in a deep commitment to customer service. “The customer is always right,” Salie emphasises.

This philosophy has earned Spedicon the trust of some of the biggest names in the Maldives. No logistical challenge is too daunting for Salie. His ability to dissect complex issues and devise innovative solutions earned him and his company the respect and admiration of peers and colleagues.

He sees a future where technology, particularly AI, becomes a valuable tool, amplifying human capabilities rather than replacing them.

AI can be a great help,” he asserts, his voice brimming with optimism. “It can give you ideas, clarity, and the resources you need to develop good solutions.”

Beyond his professional achievements, Salie is deeply committed to giving back to society. He actively supports various charitable initiatives and believes in using his success to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Through his leadership and philanthropy, Salie inspires those around him to embrace compassion, empathy, and social responsibility.

Salie, and Spedicon don’t just move cargo, they became the empathetic ear for the worried exporter, the calming voice for the frustrated importer. They learned to speak not just the languages of trade, but the languages of human concern. Salie’s story is one of resilience, faith, and a deep-seated belief in the power of human connection. His journey is far from over, and there is no doubt the waves Spedicon creates will continue to shape the landscape of global logistics for years to come.
