Maldives to Launch Satellite-Based Maritime Surveillance

Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon has unveiled plans to establish a satellite-based monitoring system to enhance the surveillance of the Maldives’ maritime domain. During a state media program, Minister Ghassan emphasized that the initiative aims to strengthen maritime security and ensure peaceful navigation in the Maldivian waters.

A team of young professionals from the Maldives Space Research Organization is spearheading the project in collaboration with the ministry. According to Minister Ghassan, these local experts are working closely with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) specialists, reflecting strong international ties and expertise driving the initiative.

“As part of this effort, we aim to establish a system that will be able to monitor our maritime domain or sea area shortly through satellites,” Ghassan explained.

The satellite-based monitoring system is expected to provide comprehensive coverage of the Maldivian waters, helping authorities detect potential threats, illegal activities, and ensure smooth maritime operations. The system is set to become operational soon, marking a significant leap in the Maldives’ defense capabilities.
