Maldives to Launch Bunkering Services as Second Tanker Arrives

In a significant development for the Maldives’ maritime industry, the second bunkering vessel, MT Marine Bella, has successfully docked near Kulhudhuffushi City, marking the country’s readiness to launch its much-anticipated bunkering services. Brought in by the State Trading Organisation (STO), the vessel boasts a capacity of 4,000 tonnes. It follows the arrival of the first tanker, Marine Angel, which docked in Kulhudhuffushi City on 9 September.

The bunkering service, set to begin in Ihavandhippolhu Atoll, is poised to reshape the Maldives’ maritime landscape. Bunkering, which involves refuelling marine ships and vessels, is expected to become a major source of revenue for the country. Thanks to its strategic location near two major international shipping lanes, the Maldives is in an ideal position to become a refuelling hub. Calm seas and accessible waters also make it a convenient stop for vessels of various sizes, according to government officials.

This new venture is a collaboration between the Maldives and Vitol Bunkers, a multinational energy and commodity trading company specializing in maritime energy solutions. The bunkering industry is projected to contribute USD 400 million to the country’s economy, adding to the current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of USD 6.5 billion.

The government has already initiated infrastructure development to support the service, including the inauguration of an office building in Uligan, Haa Alif Atoll, scheduled a day before the official launch. Additionally, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) plans to reclaim surrounding land to accommodate the growing industry, which is expected to boost state revenues and generate employment opportunities.
