Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced a series of operational measures to ensure efficient import clearance during the month of Ramadan. The company plans to process 150 containers per day at full capacity, with 100 containers cleared on half days. Operations will be conducted every day except Fridays to facilitate the smooth distribution of essential goods.
Speaking at a press conference, Head of Port Operations Ilyas Mohamed highlighted the company’s priority on perishable goods and general cargo to maintain an uninterrupted supply chain. However, he acknowledged that space constraints at the port remain a significant challenge in handling incoming shipments.
To mitigate congestion, MPL is set to transfer empty containers to Thilafushi over the next two months. Additionally, the ongoing construction of a new container terminal, contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), is part of MPL’s long-term expansion strategy.
“At the start of last year, we had space for 3,000 containers. Now, we can store around 5,100 containers, and we have been working to expand the available capacity,” Ilyas stated. Despite these improvements, he emphasized that further expansion is required to meet increasing import demands.
MPL has also enhanced its operational efficiency by increasing its unloading capacity from two vessels to three simultaneously. To support this initiative, 19 new staff members have been recruited to assist with clearance operations.
In response to the heightened demand for perishable goods during Ramadan, MPL has established additional storage facilities, including a designated godown and a temporary storage tent in Hulhumalé to facilitate food distribution.
These measures aim to streamline port operations, ensuring that essential goods reach businesses and consumers without delay during the fasting month.
