Maldives, India conclude first round of FTA talks

The Maldives and India have concluded the first round of negotiations for a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with the government aiming to finalise the agreement and bring it into effect before the end of this year.

Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed said discussions have covered 12 sectors, with consultations held with 102 stakeholders, including 65 private sector businesses from the Maldives.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Saeed said negotiations are currently focused on areas including trade in goods, services, technical barriers to trade and economic cooperation.

The minister said the proposed FTA is a key component of the government’s efforts to diversify the Maldivian economy, expand access to international markets and create new opportunities for local businesses beyond the tourism sector.

Saeed said stronger trade links with India would help provide a platform for Maldivian entrepreneurs and businesses to explore new markets and develop their potential.

The Maldives is pursuing multiple trade agreements as part of its economic expansion strategy. The Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement entered into force in January 2025, while the government is completing remaining procedures for the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) signed with Türkiye before it becomes effective.
