Maldives and US to Strengthen Maritime Cooperation

In a significant diplomatic move, the Maldives and the United States have agreed to bolster their maritime cooperation. This development came as the Indian Ocean nation’s top diplomat, Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington on Monday.

Zameer arrived in the US for a four-day visit, during which the two leaders discussed various aspects of their bilateral relationship. “Met with Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer to enhance the U.S.-Maldives partnership and cooperation on climate, economic growth, and maritime security,” Blinken announced on X (formerly Twitter).

In response, Zameer expressed the Maldives’ dedication to deepening ties with the US. “I reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthen the partnership between the Maldives and US in tackling climate change, promoting democracy and cooperation in maritime security,” he shared on X.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted the outcomes of the meeting, stating that Blinken reiterated the US commitment to fostering a free, open, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. “The Secretary highlighted the U.S. donation of eight patrol boats to Maldives and, working with Congress, the planned provision of $2 million in hydrographic support to help Maldives mitigate the impact of rising sea levels,” Miller said. Additionally, Blinken and Zameer explored further opportunities for cooperation on climate crisis response, economic growth, and maritime security.

During his stay in Washington, Zameer also engaged with Samantha Power, head of the US Agency for International Development, and other senior US officials. His visit will continue with a trip to New York, where he is scheduled to meet with UN Secretary General António Guterres and Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua.
