A potentially catastrophic incident was narrowly avoided at the Colombo Port on Sunday when a fire broke out on the 2,826 TEU container ship, MSC Cape Town III. The vessel, owned by a Geneva-based shipping company, was in the process of unloading and loading cargo when an explosion occurred in the hatch area near the accommodation block.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) swiftly mobilized its fire brigade, safety personnel, and medical teams to contain the situation. Their prompt response was instrumental in extinguishing the fire and preventing further damage. No casualties have been reported.
The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation by the SLPA, as ordered by Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. The government has also indicated that the shipping agent will be held responsible for any environmental damage caused by the incident.
The MSC Cape Town III had arrived in Colombo from Singapore and was in the process of discharging 995 TEU and loading 880 TEU when the explosion occurred. The dangerous cargo on board had already been discharged, mitigating potential risks.
The SLPA has praised the coordinated efforts of its teams and other port services for preventing a major disaster.
