A Maersk spokesperson has confirmed that the container vessel Maersk Sana encountered machinery-related issues in its main engine room on April 28, 2025, while sailing from Newark to Singapore as part of its scheduled voyage.
Three crew members were injured in the incident. One received first aid onboard, while the other two were medically evacuated to Bermuda on April 30 via the vessel Maersk Nomazwe.
Of the two evacuated, one has since been discharged, and the other has been transferred to a hospital in the United States for further treatment.
The Maersk Sana, an 8,450-TEU vessel built in 2004 and registered under the Singapore flag, is drifting safely off Bermuda’s coast.
A tow vessel is expected to reach Maersk Sana within the coming week.
At the time of the incident, the ship was operating on Maersk’s Transpacific TP11 service. Maersk has launched an investigation into the machinery failure and is coordinating with stakeholders to minimise disruptions across the supply chain.
“Safety remains our top priority, and we are committed to learning from this incident to help prevent similar occurrences in the future,” the company stated.
