Maersk Cancels $475M Offshore Wind Vessel Contract with Seatrium

Singapore-based Seatrium has received a surprising contract termination notice from Maersk Offshore Wind for a nearly completed wind turbine installation vessel, valued at approximately $475 million. The notice, issued on October 9, comes more than three years after the ship was contracted, with Maersk citing construction delays and issues.

The 145-meter vessel had been celebrated for its innovative design, capable of handling the largest offshore wind turbines and improving installation efficiency by up to 30%. It features a pioneering locking system that stabilises feeder barges during loading and is intended to support the U.S. offshore wind industry.

The vessel was under contract to Equinor for deployment at the Empire Wind offshore wind farm off Long Island, New York, which will feature 54 turbines of 15MW each, scheduled for first power by the end of 2026 and completion in 2027.

Seatrium is now reviewing the validity of the termination notice and evaluating legal and commercial options, including raising the matter with the end customer. The company stated that it intends to explore viable solutions to preserve the project and protect its contractual interests.
