Laamu Atoll’s Maritime Hub Goes to China’s CAMC Engineering

The Maldivian government has signed a contract with China’s CAMC Engineering to construct a comprehensive maritime hub in Laamu atoll. This project promises to significantly boost the atoll’s economy and transform it into a key maritime destination.

Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldives, while Lee Wei Wei, General Manager of CAMC Engineering, represented the contractor.

The project will encompass six key components:

  • Offshore bunkering: This will provide refueling services for large vessels without requiring them to enter Malé port.
  • Cruise terminal: The terminal will streamline customs and immigration procedures for cruise ship passengers, enhancing their arrival experience.
  • Super-yacht marina: Designed with international standards in mind, this marina will cater to luxury yachts, offering secure and high-quality services.
  • Eco-resort: Located between L. Gaadhoo and Fonadhoo, the eco-resort will promote sustainable tourism practices.
  • Food storage facility: This facility will ensure a reliable supply of food for the Laamu atoll community.
  • Transshipment port: The port will serve as a central point for cargo transfer and distribution.

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) presented details of the project, emphasizing the ease of access for customs and immigration services at the cruise terminal. MPL also highlighted the eco-friendly approach of the resort and the marina’s adherence to international safety and security standards. The company expressed confidence that the project will bring significant economic benefits to the entire Laamu atoll population.
