Iran and Oman Agree on Temporary Hormuz Shipping Route

Iran and Oman have agreed on a temporary shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, with further details expected in the coming days.

Iran’s top security official, Mohsen Rezaei, said Tehran would announce the new route after reaching the agreement with Oman.

According to the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, the route would enter through Iranian territorial waters and exit through them in part. He said the temporary corridor would be about 11.3 kilometers (7 miles) wide.

However, key details remain unclear, including the route’s exact coordinates, when commercial vessels can safely use it and whether restrictions will apply to certain vessels or flags.

Iran has also made it clear that the agreement does not constitute a full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Gharibabadi also urged the United States to meet its commitments under a June interim peace agreement, including sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian assets.
