In a groundbreaking development for the maritime industry, LMT, a Latvian telecommunications company, has successfully demonstrated the first full-scale maritime 5G solution. The trial, conducted aboard the icebreaker VARMA, showcased the technology’s ability to provide real-time high-volume data transfer, uninterrupted connectivity at sea, and robust communication capacity.
Representatives from various organizations, including the Freeport of Riga Authority, LVR Flote, and German port delegations, witnessed the demonstration firsthand. The trial highlighted the effectiveness of the 5G multi-hop principle, ensuring seamless communication between various vessels and drones involved. This included the icebreaker VARMA, a hydrographic survey drone, a pilot ship, and an LMT 5G aerial drone.
The demonstration built upon previous successful tests conducted in November 2023. Notably, the new solution allows for large-scale data exchange between ships, drones, and ports, overcoming limitations of traditional data transmission methods.
“The sea has long presented challenges for high-speed communication,” stated Juris Binde, President of LMT. “This maritime 5G technology represents a significant breakthrough, offering an unmatched solution in our region and globally.” Binde emphasized the growing importance of maritime 5G networks for various applications, particularly those requiring the rapid transfer of vast amounts of data. He further highlighted the strong interest from maritime logistics companies and major European ports in collaborating on the technology’s development.
The 5G network employs a multi-hop approach, relaying signals between ships to maintain uninterrupted connectivity across the sea. This successful demonstration by LMT and LVR Flote serves as a testament to the viability of 5G maritime technology in the Baltic Sea and paves the way for further advancements in port and maritime digitalization.
Kaspars Ozoliņš, Member of the Board of LVR Flote, commented on the trial’s significance: “This demonstration showcases the immense potential of 5G technology for data exchange at sea. It’s a crucial development not just for our services but for the entire maritime industry. Additionally, this project fosters an innovative testing environment within the Freeport of Riga, facilitating the creation of new projects in port and maritime digitization.”
