India announced on Saturday that it had banned the import of goods originating from or transiting through Pakistan, and barred Pakistani vessels, as tensions escalate between the nuclear-armed neighbours following a deadly attack on tourists in the disputed Kashmir region.
According to an order issued by India’s maritime authority, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), the restrictions were imposed immediately. They will remain in place ‘until further notice’ to safeguard Indian assets, cargo, and related infrastructure, in the public interest and in support of Indian shipping.
“In exercise of power conferred by section 411 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, read with objectives as enshrined under Preamble of the said Act, keeping in view the present situation, the following directions are hereby issued: A ship bearing the flag of Pakistan shall not be allowed to visit any Indian port. An Indian flag ship shall not visit any port of Pakistan,” the DGS order said.
In response, Pakistan’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs banned Indian-flagged vessels from docking at its ports and prohibited Pakistani ships from entering Indian ports.
Bilateral trade between India and Pakistan has sharply declined over the past five years, with official data showing a 56.91% drop in India’s exports to Pakistan between April 2024 and February 2025, falling to just $491 million.
Experts note that while direct trade between the two countries has nearly disappeared, indirect trade through third countries, particularly in the Middle East, remains active.
