Hithadhoo Port Set for Major Upgrade

The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has embarked on discussions with international companies to spearhead a significant upgrade of Hithadhoo Port in Addu City. This ambitious initiative aims to completely transform the port’s capabilities and establish it as a key player in the Maldivian economy.

Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, CEO of MPL, highlighted that despite being operational for 18 years, the port currently only accommodates smaller vessels. Mr. Ibrahim also expressed his disappointment with prior administrations for neglecting the port’s development.

The planned improvements are substantial. The project will see both the quay wall and the terminal significantly expanded, allowing Hithadhoo Port to handle the largest vessels. Additionally, MPL is actively exploring the establishment of a dedicated fish hub within the port. Discussions are underway with foreign partners to assess the feasibility of this hub within the Maldivian context.

Furthermore, MPL has devised a strategy to introduce bunkering services in Addu City as a means to stimulate port activity. Initially, the upgraded quay wall will facilitate bunkering for smaller vessels.
