Two HD Hyundai units have signed a strategic agreement with Germany’s NEURA Robotics to develop humanoid welding robots tailored for shipbuilding. Signed in Munich, the partnership aims to tackle skilled labour shortages while enhancing safety and productivity in shipyards.
HD Hyundai Samho will provide real-world testing environments, drawing on its experience in automation, while HD Hyundai Robotics contributes welding path data and technical expertise. NEURA Robotics will integrate its advanced cognitive robotics, including its humanoid platform 4NE-1, to create adaptable, shipyard-ready solutions.
“This agreement marks a major step in unlocking the full potential of cognitive robots in one of the world’s toughest industrial settings,” said NEURA Robotics CEO David Reger.
South Korea’s shipbuilding sector has seen a strong post-pandemic recovery but continues to face labour shortages. HD Hyundai Samho’s Executive Director Sanghun Ryu noted the initiative will play a key role in building safer, more efficient shipyards.
