An oil tanker operated by state-run Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) ran aground on the reef of Nilandhoo in the early hours of yesterday morning. The incident occurred on the northwest side of the island, according to Ibrahim Nasih, President of the Nilandhoo Island Council.
Nasih expressed concerns about potential environmental and structural damage. “Since it was an oil-laden boat, we are trying to ascertain if there was any damage or rupture underneath. We are looking at whether there has been any crack,” he said. He noted that the tanker was perched high on the reef, making inspection and removal challenging.
The council president confirmed that while the incident has been reported to the authorities, no action has been taken at the site so far. “The process is yet to begin, and there’s no active presence in the area,” he added.
FSM has yet to issue a statement or respond to requests for comments regarding the situation.
