Foreign Vessel Seized for Illegal Fishing in Maldivian Waters

A foreign fishing vessel has been seized, and its owner fined for illegal fishing in Maldivian waters.

The Civil Court of the Maldives has ordered the confiscation of the Sri Lankan vessel Pushpa Kumara and imposed a fine of MVR 400,000 on its owner, Tamanta. The ruling came after a case was filed by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources.

The court delivered its judgment in the absence of Tamanta on Wednesday, declaring the fine as a proven debt. He has been ordered to pay the amount within 30 days from October 15. Additionally, the court upheld the decision to confiscate the vessel used in the illegal fishing operations.

The seizure of foreign vessels and strict penalties for offenders underscore the government’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime resources.
