Fire Breaks Out on Singapore-Flagged Container Ship Off Kerala Coast

A fire broke out on board the Singapore-flagged container vessel MV Wan Hai 503 off the coast of Kerala on Monday morning, according to Defence PRO Kochi. The underdeck fire was first reported around 10:30 a.m. by the Maritime Operations Centre (MOC) in Mumbai, which then alerted their counterparts in Kochi. Though initially mistaken for an explosion, officials later confirmed it to be a fire.

The 270-metre-long vessel with a draught of 12.5 metres had departed Colombo on June 7 and was en route to Mumbai at a cruising speed of 14.4 knots, with an expected arrival on June 10. The incident occurred approximately 78 nautical miles off the Beypore coast in Kozhikode district.

20 containers reportedly fell into the sea, and several explosions were heard from the vessel. Of the 22 crew members on board, 18 evacuated using a lifeboat. Rescue operations are currently underway, with the Indian Coast Guard and Navy deploying ships and aircraft to assist. The vessel remains on fire and is drifting.
