Conflict in the Gulf Redraws Global Trade Routes

The Iran-Israel conflict’s immediate effect is being felt in global shipping and logistics.

The US and Israel launched a “pre-emptive” strike on Iran Saturday, plunging the Middle East into a new and highly unpredictable conflict. The move sent immediate tremors through global energy markets, with the Strait of Hormuz once again thrust into the centre of rising geopolitical risk.

Rerouting and Higher Cost

Shipping lines are redirecting vessels away from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf, choosing to sail around the Cape of Good Hope instead of transiting the Suez Canal.

This detour adds roughly 10 days to transit times and significantly increases fuel and operational expenses.

Effect on the Maldives

For the Maldives, the Cape of Good Hope route is expected to add  10–14 days to delivery times, increasing fuel usage, and spiking freight costs.

The Maldives is highly dependent on imports, and delays in container arrivals greatly affect the local supply chains.

Increased freight surcharges and insurance premiums drive up the cost of consumer goods, food, fuel, and construction materials. Due to this, retailers might face stock shortages and uncertain delivery times.

Oil Markets Under Pressure

Iran exports around 1.6 million barrels of oil per day, according to the International Energy Agency, with most shipments bound for China.

Any disruption to these flows would force refiners to seek alternative supplies, tightening global markets and driving prices upward.

Nearly 20% of the world’s oil passes daily through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical maritime chokepoints, linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Prolonged military action in this corridor could sharply increase oil prices, with direct consequences for global fuel and energy costs.

The United States and Israel launched strikes on several Iranian cities, including Tehran. In retaliation, Iran fired missiles at Israel and US military sites across Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, heightening fears of a broader regional conflict.
