Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has awarded China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) the contract to construct new international and domestic quay walls for the relocation of Malé Commercial Harbor to Thilafushi.
MPL CEO Captain Hussain Shafeeg and CHEC Country Manager Mao Bao signed the agreement at MPL’s head office.
MPL states that the project aims to resolve traffic congestion at Malé Harbor, expand capacity to support maritime and logistics growth, and accelerate cargo handling.
Scope of Work
- International Quay Wall: A 375-meter wall with a depth of 14.6 meters, designed to accommodate large international container ships.
- Domestic Quay Wall: A key-wall with a depth of 5 meters and a length of 820 meters, specifically for marine vessels that sail through Maldivian waters.
This contract follows ongoing groundwork. On July 1, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was assigned to construct a separate 100-meter domestic quay wall and pave three hectares of land.
Scheduled for completion on November 11, 2027, Thilafushi Harbor will include over 1,000 meters of international quay space. The domestic terminal will feature a 2,000-meter quay wall, replacing the capacity of the current Malé North and Southwest Harbors to keep trade moving efficiently across the country.
