Swedish company Candela will supply 10 P-12 electric hydrofoil vessels to Ego Shuttle in the Maldives. The operations are set to start in 2026. The vessels will connect Malé International Airport with nearby islands, offering faster, quieter, and more sustainable transfers.
Reducing Fuel Consumption
The P-12 glides 1.5 metres above water on computer-controlled hydrofoils, reducing energy consumption by up to 80%. Compared to conventional speedboats, which burn around five litres of fuel per mile.
“With the Candela P-12, we finally have a vessel capable of replacing fossil-fuel boats while protecting the environment,”. Said Shabir Walji, CEO of Ego Shuttle.
Modern design
The boats feature Wi-Fi, entertainment screens, and refreshments. Ego Shuttle plans to establish a local training and service hub for Maldivian employees.
This initiative supports the Maldives’ commitment to net zero emissions by 2030. Candela has also confirmed a similar order of 10 vessels from Thailand’s Seudamgo, marking growing global interest in electric hydrofoils.
