As of 16th September 2024, the government has yet to receive MVR 930.3 million in environmental fines, according to a compliance audit of the Environment Ministry released by the Audit Office on Tuesday.

The audit, which reviewed the ministry’s operations for 2019, 2020 and 2021, found that fines imposed for environmental damage, largely arising from maritime activities, remain unpaid. While the report did not disclose details of individual cases, such fines are commonly issued when vessels, particularly barges, run aground on reefs, causing extensive marine and coastal damage.
The Audit Office urged the ministry to strengthen recovery mechanisms for outstanding maritime environmental fines. It recommended enforcing payment within stipulated timeframes, issuing reminder letters with a seven-day deadline, followed by a formal notice granting an additional seven days if payments are not made. In line with Finance Regulations, unresolved cases should then be referred to the Ministry of Finance for further action.
Environmental penalties related to maritime incidents are typically levied by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
