The cargo vessel M.V. MSS Graphene lost 17 empty 40-foot containers overboard while awaiting a berth off the Port of Colombo after encountering severe weather conditions.
According to Maldives State Shipping (MSS), the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities, and the vessel remains under close monitoring.
The containers on board were also displaced due to the heavy rolling caused by the rough seas. As a precaution, the Harbor Master recommended that the vessel’s docking be delayed until the weather improves and it becomes safe to proceed.
The delay will be likely to impact the vessel’s berthing, the discharge of its cargo, and the subsequent delivery of its cargo.
MSS is closely coordinating with the Harbor Master, the terminal authorities, and other concerned stakeholders to make sure that the vessel can safely berth. The company also stated that revised schedules will be released once the vessel’s berthing arrangements have been confirmed.
The company also apologized for the inconvenience resulting from the delays and asked that customers understand while the safety assessments are being carried out.
Sri Lankan authorities issued a navigational warning after the containers were lost and urged vessels in the area to exercise caution and report any drifting containers.
